Kiba Kiba Books - Children's Books Created by Children!

It's easy to make a book for your school! Art teachers just follow these simple steps:

STEP 1.) Read a story out loud to a group of students or participants. (Maybe you have written a story, maybe the kids have written one together? It's up to you to decide where the story comes from but it must be original and not be copyrighted. If you don't want the participants to illustrate a story, they can create a book based around a THEME like birds, fish, wildlife, etc.) Either way, as you are reading, tell the students to visualize detailed pictures and images in their mind's eye that match the words.

STEP 2.) Allow each student to choose a page (or sentence from the story) that they would like to illustrate and draw a picture for. Ask them to choose the words that stand out the most to them, and the words they think they can illustrate the best.

Once each student has their idea, ask them to write their name and their sentence/idea on a piece of paper so that you can remember who has illustrated which page.

TIP: If you have 28 kids in a class, and the book is 32 pages, you can have each kid illustrate one page. (This leaves 4 pages in the front of the book for credits and inside cover pages.) Or you can create the book layout anyway that you'd like. If you have 14 students to work with, then words can be on one side of the book spread and pictures on the other. Or words and pictures on each page. It's your book and your 32 pages. You can create it anyway you'd like. You are encouraged to be creative! You can create a book with as many kids as you want. If you have a big group, you can put multiple pictures on one page. If you have a small group, you can have each student create two illustrations for the book.

STEP 3.) Using pencils, have the students make a sketch of their drawing and their initial idea. There is no right or wrong way to illustrate and create images for the words. Pictures don't have to look "realistic" if you don't want them to be. Images can be the student's own creative interpretation of the story. It's up to you the make the "rules" and guidelines. ANYTHING GOES! Be creative.

STEP 4.) Using other art materials, ask students to fill in their pencil drawing with color (fabric, paper, paint, real food, etc.) Ask the art teacher for suggestions. You can be creative and create the book artwork anyway that you'd like. These are just basic guidelines. Please feel free to get creative and do it your own way.

STEP 5.) When the artwork has been completed (after 1 day, 2 days or a week - the length of the workshop is up to you), the leader of the project needs to scan the artwork using a flat bed scanner and send a CD with artwork and all of the words to the story to Kiba Kiba Books. Email jessica [at] kibakiba.com for an address.

YOU CAN KEEP THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK.

According to what permissions are granted, children who contributed artwork and the school will be specially thanked inside the front of the book (not on each specific page.) (Children’s names and ages will only be used if permission is granted.)

STEP 6.) That's all! Once Kiba Kiba receives the artwork, your own unique original children's book will be published by Kiba Kiba Books and available for you to use as a fundraiser!
